2014 - University of Arizona

The MEC Student Chapter Award is presented to the University of Arizona "for the chapter's outreach activities throughout the 2013-2014 academic year." The MEC Student Chapter Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of an SME Student Chapter on a college campus and its faculty and industry advisors for their accomplishments in community outreach and mining/mineral education to serve the mission of the MEC.

The University of Arizona Student Chapter competed in the MEC Outreach Team Challenge for which teams spent hours preparing and presenting material to students of all ages, through preschool to seniors in high school. Mining is now more understood throughout the Tucson community and surrounding areas. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 students in the southern Arizona region were reached.
This student chapter also hosted several science fairs and an SME summer camp internship, where high school students interested in engineering were given an opportunity to live on campus and experience a week of engineering coursework.
