SME Foundation takes a leadership role in the future of mining

Corporate donors step up support for SMEF educational programs

Giants of the mining industry are showing their support for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Foundation (SMEF) by donating generously to its education and outreach initiatives. During the first quarter of 2015, 18 companies have provided more than $865,000 to ensure the programs administered by the SMEF are sustained and maintained at a high caliber of excellence. Contributions of special note include:

  • $200,000 from Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in support of the Ph.D. Fellowship and Academic Career Development Grants

  • $100,000 from Newmont Mining to enhance the outreach efforts of the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC)

  • $100,000 from Caterpillar Global Mining for programs including ABET accreditation, Professional Engineers Exam, and the MEC programs

“The generosity of our donors not only enhances the benefits SME can offer to its members worldwide, it also invests in programs that realize the opportunities and meet the challenges facing our industry,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “Together with significant help from our corporate partners, we can build a stronger mining and minerals industry and the educational resources that are critical to its success.”

In 2015, the SMEF is expanding its grant programs. SME’s Miners Give Back humanitarian initiative has collaborated with Engineers without Borders USA to support a community water system project in Guatemala. The Ph.D. Fellowship will award $60,000 grants to support students in achieving a doctoral degree in a mining-related field and choosing a career in education. The $100,000 Academic Career Development Grants will provide new mining professors with the financial support needed to achieve tenure and promotion, ensuring that qualified professionals fill the pipeline of needed educators.
