SME Foundation joins #GivingTuesday

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Foundation (SMEF) will once again participate in the annual #GivingTuesday charitable initiative. #GivingTuesday is a national day set aside for charities, families, businesses, community centers and people around the world to come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. This national day of giving kicks off the charitable season and is held the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. This year the social media event will be held on December 2, 2014.

“The SMEF fulfills its mission by supporting projects that meet industry demands for engineers and researchers in the future, while educating children, teachers and the public about the significant role that the minerals industry play in their lives today,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “It offers many opportunities that members can take advantage of to support the industry that supports them, and Giving Tuesday is one of the most convenient ways to give back.”

SMEF provides services for the industry professional, the university student and K-12 educators. It supports the health of the industry by strengthening the professional workforce, enhancing mining-related education and educating communities about mining. Specific programs include accreditation of university mining engineering departments, facilitating the Professional Engineers Review Exam for mining engineers, providing K-12 mining and mineral education materials and scholarships for college-level students.
