Minerals Education Coalition materials now correlated to all national and state education standards

Online curriculum tool for teachers available Oct. 1

The Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Foundation (SMEF) strives to generate an enlightened and supportive public that appreciates the importance of mining and minerals in their lives and lifestyles. To achieve this mission, MEC materials must be technically accurate, industry relevant, grade appropriate, and meet state and national educational standards.

MEC has partnered with EdGate Correlation Services to ensure MEC materials are correlated with the full detailed array of Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards in language arts, math, and social sciences including geography, history and economics, and all state standards. The correlations will be made by EdGate’s team of curriculum experts and kept up-to-date.

“MEC is committed to providing materials that support the efforts of K-12 teachers to meet national and state educational standards while teaching their students about the importance of mining and minerals in their daily lives,” stated John Hayden, Director of MEC. “Using EdGate is an exciting way to upgrade the educational effectiveness of MEC materials on our website, and become more user-friendly for teachers.”

A key aspect of the services that EdGate provides is a searchable website tool. Teachers will be able to search all MEC curriculum materials on www.MineralsEducationCoalition.org by subject and standard through this tool. MEC currently hosts or links to more than 200 free or low cost educational activities, videos, demonstrations, posters, presentations and kits. The correlations will be available online October 1, 2015. For more information about MEC, visit www.MineralsEducationCoalition.org.
